We recently helped our friends at Wasabi acquire the young Into Mischief broodmare Miss Malibu, and we are excited to send her to Claiborne Farm to be bred to the highly-proven Blame in 2023.
With 5 G1Ws among his 43 career stakes winners (good for a super strong 7% of his foals aged 3&up), Blame has proven time and again that he is capable of getting a very good horse, which makes him an excellent match for a mare who is still early in her breeding career. He also gets both good turf horses and good dirt horses (not to mention some who can do either), and that is something we find particularly appealing about him with respect to Miss Malibu. That’s because Miss Malibu’s dam, Malibu Pier, was a multiple G2-winning turf runner who also won on all-weather and was G1-placed on dirt in the La Brea, and Miss Malibu’s two black-type sisters were Coasted (SW/G1P on turf) and her full-sister Malibu Stacy (multiple graded-placed on dirt). Miss Malibu herself is a daughter of the four-time leading sire Into Mischief, who is renowned foremost as dirt sire, but who also has gotten the likes of this year’s G1 Pegasus Turf winner Atone, and her broodmare sire, Malibu Moon, also tends to be predominantly a dirt influence, although he got some very good turf horses, too. Then a little further back, Miss Malibu’s family is strictly European turf.
So there is a lot of surface versatility in Miss Malibu’s genes, and we think it behooves her to visit a sire that complements that versatility like Blame does. Blame also is a leggy, stoutly-made horse who will hopefully stretch out Miss Malibu’s foal just a bit.
Although TrueNicks gives this match a “No Rating” (nor does Blame have any foals of racing age out of Into Mischief mares), we see plenty to recommend this pairing on paper: Into Mischief is the current scion of the Storm Cat sire-line and is very reminiscent of his great-grandsire on proclivities, and Blame has sired G2W Shotski plus G3Ws Blamed, Ms Bad Behavior, Onus and Beyond Blame out of Storm Cat-line mares. And Malibu Moon is a son of A.P. Indy, which has been a very strong cross for Blame (G1Ws Nadal and Senga, among others). Plus, Blame’s stakes winners Onus (G3) and Queen Caroline (more recently the dam of Eclipse Champion Forte) are out of mares bred on the same Storm Cat over A.P. Indy/Seattle Slew cross as is Miss Malibu, while Senga (G1) and Far From Over (G3) are out of mares bred A.P. Indy over Storm Cat.
All of which, we believe, makes Blame and excellent choice for Miss Malibu!
