Our latest Housatonic Recommended Mating sends Tiz Emily and Jill to Curlin’s classic-placed son Irish War Cry as a member of this brilliant new Maryland stallion’s first book.
Although there are not yet any stakes winners by Smart Strike’s sons out of mares by Tiznow or his sons (Tiz Emily and Jill being a daughter of Tiznow’s son Tiz Wonderful), there are less than 20 foals of racing age bred this way, so it’s a bit early to write off the nick — and it has produced the black-type runner Protective Shield. Otherwise, everything else about this match-up says that Irish War Cry and Tiz Emily and Jill will fit each other perfectly:
- Tiz Emily and Jill’s dam, Lakefront, is an unraced daughter of Deputy Minister, whose sons Awesome Again and Graeme Hall are each the broodmare sire of a Grade 1 winner by Curlin (Keen Ice and Curalina, respectively), among four stakes winners bred on this cross, which results in inbreeding to Deputy Minister (4×3 in this instance), since he’s also Curlin’s broodmare sire.
- Lakefront’s dam, Lakeway, is a daughter of Seattle Slew, whose sons and grandsons have produced the dams of Curlin’s Grade 1 winners Exaggerator, Stellar Wind and Off the Tracks, plus Grade 2 winner Moulin de Mougin and 2019 stakes winner Dabster.
- Tiz Emily and Jill’s sire, Tiz Wonderful, is out of a mare by Storm Cat’s son Hennessy. Hennessy is the broodmare sire of Curlin’s 2019 Grade 3 winner Gladiator King, plus there are four other Graded winners by Curlin and out of mares by Storm Cat or one of his sons.
In addition, all three of the stakes winners so far descending from Lakeway are by Mr. Prospector-line sires like Curlin (a grandson of Mr. Prospector), namely Lakeway’s daughter Sluice (by Seeking the Gold) and her own Grade 1-winning daughter Mushka (by Empire Maker), and Tiz Emily and Jill’s half-sister Dattts Our Girl (by Thunder Gulch).
Looking past pedigree, we like how Irish War Cry and Tiz Emily and Jill match up physically and on proclivities, as well. Both are good-sized, well-balanced horses with plenty of scope, and while Tiz Emily and Jill did all of her running at 7 furlongs and shorter (triumphant in four of her 32 races from 3- through 6-years-old, good for earnings of $146,070), she was bred to handle American classic distances, being by a son of two-time Breeders’ Cup Classic-G1 winner Tiznow out of a daughter of Lakeway, who won the Mother Goose-G1 and three other Grade 1 races as a sophomore.
Irish War Cry, meanwhile, was at his best at 3, when he won the Grade 2 Holy Bull and Wood Memorial stakes at 1-1/16 miles and 1-1/8 miles, respectively, then placed in the classic Belmont Stakes going 1-1/2 miles. But he was also an unbeaten 2-year-old at 6 and 7 furlongs, and he showed plenty of natural, tactical speed in his races.
So this is a match-up that has a lot to recommend it, and we are very excited to see the foal that Tiz Emily and Jill produces in 2020 to kick off her reproductive career.
