One of the toughest tasks in planning matings is trying to identify stallions who offer value for their stud fee. In the case of Tiz Emily and Jill’s 2021 mate, we believe that the results achieved by the first crop of Brody’s Cause make his advertised stud fee of $5,000 very good value indeed.
Sid Fernando laid out the case for Brody’s Cause in the TDN recently (read that article here), pointing out that he had as many stakes winners and stakes horses as any other first-crop stallion to that point (including Not This Time, Laoban and Nyquist, who get fee increases to $40,000, $25,000 and $75,000, respectively, for 2021) despite having fewer foals to draw from than his higher-profile contemporaries. And since then, two more of his runners (namely Smiley Sobotka and Kalypso) have added graded-stakes placings to their resumes, the latter in a grade 1.
Brody’s Cause himself was a $350,000 yearling who became a Grade 1 winner at 2YO, having won the Breeders’ Futurity (over Exaggerator) and finished 3rd in the G1 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile, before returning at 3 to win the G1 Blue Grass (over Laoban, among others). Like many by his sire Giant’s Causeway, he showed 2YO class but improved with age and some distance as well. That’s a profile we expect him to pass along, also, which is one of the reasons that his success so far is so encouraging — his runners should only get better in 2021.
Tiz Emily and Jill is out of a mare who is a half-sister to a pair of graded stakes-placed fillies by Giant’s Causeway (Flying Spur, 3rd in the G1 Kentucky Oaks, and Front Range), so the sire-line has worked with this female family already. With three of Brody’s Cause’s black-type earners being out of mares by sons of A.P. Indy, we think Tiz Emily and Jill’s inbreeding to Seattle Slew bodes well for this match, as well. And sons of Giant’s Causeway have already produced the likes of millionaire and 15x stakes winner Welder from Tiznow-line mares.
Physically, Brody’s Cause is a gorgeous, incredibly well-balanced individual of medium size, and he should fit the leggier, rangier Tiz Emily and Jill quite nicely.
