Sister Dawn was a black-type winner who was also multiple Graded Stakes-placed during her own racing career, and she has gone on to produce a black-type winner plus three other six-figure earners already during her broodmare career. We acquired her on behalf of CJT Stables, LLC, at the ’24 Keeneland November Sale for $23,000 carrying a foal by Independence Hall, and think she makes a perfect breed-to-race candidate in the lucrative New York state-bred program.
Once upon a time, Sister Dawn was a $120k yearling purchase-turned $290k 2YO in-training (she also sold for $260k carrying her first foal, and $275k carrying her third foal). She had her best campaign as a sophomore when she won four races including the Playa Del Rey Stakes, finished 2nd in the Grade 2 Bayakoa Handicap against older mares, and 3rd in the Grade 3 Santa Paula Stakes. Her highest Equibase Speed Figure was a very strong 104, and she had a total of four six-figure figures.
In the breeding shed, Sister Dawn’s foals by Eskendereya, Giant’s Causeway and Congrats have all earned six-figures, while her daughter Buy the Best, by Tapiture, won a pair of black-type races and earned $204,000. Sister Dawn has a ’22 filly by Gun Runner (a $300k 2YO in-training purchase), and her ’24 foal is a colt by Jackie’s Warrior.
The Independence Hall foal that Sister Dawn is carrying will be bred on the same Tapit/Indian Charlie cross as Horse of the Year Flightline, plus Grade 2 winners Charge It and Elm Drive. It will also be similarly-bred to the aforementioned Buy the Best (Tapiture being a son of Tapit, while Independence Hall is a grandson of Tapit). Physically, although Sister Dawn has some age to her she does not show it other than having a bit of a dip in her back, and we are confident of getting a few more foals out of her in New York before it’s all said and done. Her strong, solid physique is very much in the mold of her sire, and makes her a great match for the leggier Independence Hall.
