(2018 dark bay/brown mare by Shanghai Bobby out of Walk of Stars, by Street Sense)
Housatonic acquired Star of Shanghai for $5,000 at the conclusion of her racing career, and sold her 13 months later via the Fasig-Tipton Digital platform for $85,000.
Star of Shanghai broke her maiden as a 4YO going a mile on the all-weather at Presque Isle Downs, and was placed in 9 additional starts while earning $44,126 racing from 2YO through 5YO. She was bred for the first time in 2024, to the leading young Maryland stallion Blofeld.
Star of Shanghai is out of the open company black-type winner Walk of Stars (who also broke her maiden by more than 30(!) lengths), and is a half-sister to the black-type placed, $200k earner Hollywood Walk. Star of Shanghai’s other siblings include the winner Starstreet (an $80,000 yearling), and Mindframe, a colt of 2021 by Constitution who sold for $600,000 to Repole & St. Elias Stables at the ’22 Keeneland September Yearling Sale, is one of three Maryland-breds nominated to the 2024 Triple Crown, and who romped by 13-3/4 lengths in a TDN Rising Star debut! There is also a Maclean’s Music colt of ’22 named Lonesome Road out of Walk of Stars who will be campaigned by breeder R. Larry Johnson and trainer Mike Trombetta, and the mare was mated to Jack Christopher in 2023. She will visit Constitution in 2024.
Walk of Stars is a half-sister to the multiple black-type winner and G2-placed Strike the Moon, and to the black-type placed What Time It Is (in turn the dam of Maryland-bred champion Never Enough Time). Her dam, Star Kell, is out of black-type winner Special Kell (who is also the ancestress of G3 winner and sire Street Magician), and the next dam is Larry Johnson’s foundation mare Ran’s Chick (Star of Shanghai’s 4th dam).
