(2018 gray/roan mare by Ghostzapper out of Carella, by Tapit)
Zarella is a young daughter of Horse of the Year Ghostzapper, whose record as a broodmare sire already includes Triple Crown winner Justify, plus champion Drefong and MG1W Up to the Mark. Zarella is the first foal out of the winning Tapit mare Carella, whose two subsequent foals are both winners, including six-figure earner Eldest Son (by Into Mischief). Carella has a 2021 colt by Ghostzapper and a 2022 filly by Street Boss to come for Godolphin.
Two months after we purchased Zarella on behalf of Wasabi for $42,000 in foal to Street Boss, Carella was sold at the Keeneland January Sale and topped her session at $260,000 (in foal to Kantharos on a June cover), the same day that Zarella’s half-sister Hidden Wonder brought $150,000 (also in foal to Street Boss). Hidden Wonder was subsequently bred back to Authentic for ’24, while Carella went to Uncle Mo.
Carella is a half-sister to the Champion and Preakness winner Bernardini, who went on to be a leading sire and is an outstanding young broodmare sire, as well as to the G1-placed dam of G1 winner Love and Pride, to the dam of G3 winner Thiskyhasnolimit, and to the dam of stakes winner Sunset Wish. Carella’s dam is Cara Rafaela, who was a G1 winner at 2YO and placed in 5 other G1s, then was a Broodmare of the Year in her second career.
Zarella placed in half of her 6 starts for Godolphin before retiring to the broodmare band.
Zarella delivered a colt by Street Boss in ’23, and was bred back to Speaker’s Corner for her foal of ’24.
