Gift Box is the first son of the upwardly-mobile young stallion Twirling Candy to go to stud, and when Ride the Tide visits him in 2022, it will duplicate a cross that has worked very well so far for Twirling Candy.
Ride the Tide is a winning daughter of Stormy Atlantic, and from just 7 runners by Twirling Candy out of Stormy Atlantic mares, there are 5 winners, including a pair of stakes winners (one of them being Canadian classic winner One Bad Boy) — good for an “A++” TrueNicks rating. This is also an extension of the highly-successful Candy Ride/Storm Cat cross which is responsible for the likes of Gun Runner (and his two first crop G1 winners), Rombauer, Shared Belief, Sidney’s Candy, Pinehurst, etc. And with Gift Box’s pedigree being free from Storm Cat blood, no doubt that cross will be highly tried with him as well (and hopefully prove equally successful).
Ride the Tide is also a half-sister to a pair of black-type fillies, and one of those is by Broken Vow, who is from the same Fappiano sire-line as Gift Box (one through Unbridled, the other through Cryptoclearance), so we think that augurs well for the chances of the foal from this pairing, too.
Physically, Gift Box is a big, stout horse who ought to beef up Ride the Tide’s foal a bit, and she was a winner on the dirt herself despite a slightly more turf-leaning pedigree — Gift Box will reinforce those dirt tendencies, and the pair will hopefully produce a talented foal, whatever the surface!
