It’s rare thus far in our bloodstock career to have sent a mare to the same stallion two years in a row, just because of the vagaries of the commercial breeding market. But in the case of $300k-earning Wowwhatabrat, we like the matchup with Jimmy Creed so much that she will be heading right back for another breeding with him in 2022.
Some of the appeal to the mating comes from Jimmy Creed’s accomplishments as a stallion, and the fact that starting a young mare off with proven stallions for her first few years gives that mare’s owner the best line on her abilities as a producer. We have been on the Jimmy Creed bandwagon for a couple of years now, and with his biggest and best-bred crops now having just turned 3YO and 2YO, his profile is poised for enhancement in the next year or two. As it is, in 2021 he picked up his first G1 victory as a sire (5YO Casa Creed in the Jaipur), and only three stallions topped Jimmy Creed’s 8 black-type juveniles in 2021 (led by Kaufymaker, who placed at the Breeders’ Cup). He has another 87 2YOs coming to the races in 2022, conceived at his highest stud fee so far ($20,000).
TrueNicks gives this mating an “A++” (just like last year) with three stakes winners from 26 runners by Distorted Humor and his sons out of Sovereign Dancer-line mares. And Jimmy Creed’s sire, Distorted Humor, got G1 Haskell winner Any Given Saturday out of a half-sister to Wowwhatabrat’s dam — meaning the foal from this mating will be relatively closely-related to Any Given Saturday, whose other victories included the G2 Brooklyn and G2 Dwyer.
Physically, Jimmy Creed is a beautifully balanced, medium-sized horse with plenty of mass and muscle, and Wowwhatabrat is a bit of a taller, longer, leaner model — we think they’ll blend nicely, as will their racetrack proclivities: while Jimmy Creed was at his best sprinting on dirt, he has sired versatile types who have handled turf and dirt, going short and long, and Wowwhatabrat did a little bit of everything, as have members of her female family.
