The one-time $170,000 2-year-old in-training purchase Notassharpasuthink has a lovely weanling filly of 2018 by Speightstown’s promising New York freshman-sire son Central Banker that was purchased in utero a year ago, and after she delivers her Fed Biz foal next spring she will head back to our favorite Speightstown stallion Munnings, in a Housatonic Recommended Mating.
We have mentioned repeatedly how highly we think of Munnings as a stallion, and with his stud fee reduced to $20,000 in 2019, he has to be the best value sire in the business (if he wasn’t already). To hit some of the highlights: from his first 413 foals of racing age, including 128 2-year-olds of 2018, he has 27 stakes winners — an excellent 7%. This includes a pair of Grade 1 winners and eleven total Graded stakes winners. If you take this year’s 2-year-olds out of the stats (he does have one juvenile stakes winner this year), he has 9.5% stakes winners/foals aged 3 and up, and 3.9% Graded winners/foals. He has also accomplished this without much help from his mates, so far, as he has a 1.61 AEI/1.27 CI ratio. With his better-bred crops coming shortly (starting with his 2018 yearlings, of which 64 averaged almost $80,000 this year, compared to his 2017 yearling average of $52,000 for 56 sold), these statistics are only going to improve in the coming years.
Munnings and Speightstown each has a stakes winner from a mare by a son of Forty Niner, from just 34 total foals bred this way, (for Munnings, that’s his multiple stakes-winning 2-year-old son Bring It On Dude), so the cross has had success. There is also a 2o18 Grade 3 winner by a grandson of Gone West (like Munnings is) whose second dam is by Silver Hawk (as is the case with Notassharpasuthink), and Notassharpasuthink’s second dam is by Slew City Slew, a sire-line with which Munnings has had strong results so far. In fact, her second dam is a full-sister to the top 2-year-old Evansville Slew, who himself happens to be the sire of the second dam of Munnings’s multiple stakes winner Hailstorm Slew.
On top of all this, Notassharpasuthink’s dam is already a half to stakes-placed winner by Munnings himself, and we always like to see that a mare’s female family has worked with the stallion in question.
As a rangy, scopey mare, Notassharpasuthink ought to inject a bit of leg into her foal by Munnings, and with her three career wins coming from 6 furlongs to a mile on dirt and turf, her proclivities should match up perfectly with those of Munnings and his offspring.
