By now everyone knows we love Jimmy Creed at Spendthrift Farm and think he offers excellent value in 2021, but that’s just one of the reasons that we’re recommending Wowwhatabrat visit him this spring for her first mating.
Perhaps most importantly, Jimmy Creed is a son of Distorted Humor, who sired the G1 Haskell winner Any Given Saturday out of a mare who is a half-sister to Wowwhatabrat’s dam — meaning the foal from this mating will be relatively closely-related to Any Given Saturday, whose other victories included the G2 Brooklyn and G2 Dwyer. Additionally, Wowwhatabrat is sired by the Preakness winner Louis Quatorze (by Sovereign Dancer), and the Distorted Humor/Sovereign Dancer cross rates an A++ from TrueNicks on the basis of 3 stakes winners (and a stakes-placed winner) from just 25 runners.
And for a mare’s first mating, it’s always nice to be able to go with a proven commodity, in order to help give the best line possible on the mare’s ability as a producer. In Jimmy Creed’s case, he now has four crops of racing age, not including his 2021 2YOs, and from those 259 foals of racing age, his 14 stakes winners is good for 5.4% of his foals, and he sports a 1.30 AEI compared to just a 1.01 CI, meaning he moves his mares way up. His four graded winners include the top-class King Jack, who earned a 111 Beyer taking the G2 Gallant Bob at 6 furlongs on dirt, plus the likes of Casa Creed, who won the G2 National Museum of Racing HOF Stakes going a mile on turf and was G1-placed this year at 5, as was Kanthaka (a dual-surface sprinter). After starting out at $12,500 for his first season, Jimmy Creed’s subsequent crops were conceived at fees down to as low as $5,000 advertised, but his early success earned him a bump to $15,000 in 2018 when he covered 164 mares (his increase in mares-bred led the country that season) — a crop which is 2YO in 2021 — and $20,000 for 2019 when he covered 138 mares.
Physically, Jimmy Creed is a beautifully balanced, medium-sized horse with plenty of mass and muscle, and Wowwhatabrat is a bit of a longer, leaner model — we think they’ll blend nicely, as will their racetrack proclivities: while Jimmy Creed was at his best sprinting on dirt, he has sired versatile types who have handled turf and dirt, going short and long, and Wowwhatabrat did a little bit of everything, as have members of her female family.
