For a mare owner interested in breeding a foal to keep and race, Tapiture remains a strong value option as a stallion that gets a high percentage of winners — and early winners — and plenty of black-type runners, as well. We are excited to recommend him for the young American Pharoah mare Irish Pharaoh in 2024.
Tapiture has consistently ranked near the top of his sire-class across various metrics, slotting in among stallions with significantly higher stud fees than what he has ever charged (like Constitution, American Pharoah, Liam’s Map, Honor Code, etc) and with much less help from his mates (his lifetime CI is just 1.14). He has 26 career stakes winners, including 2023 multiple G3W and G1P Repo Rocks (earner of two of the highest Beyer Speed Figures awarded last season), plus 36 more black-type runners. Tapiture is already the sire of a pair of new stakes winners in 2024 in the 3YO Nice As Pie and the 6YO Love My Jimmy, demonstrating his versatility. Also noteworthy is the fact that more than have of his lifetime black-type earners have achieved that status as juveniles, meaning that a mare owner can hope for an early return when she produces a Tapiture foal.
Though American Pharoah is very early in his career as a broodmare sire, Pioneerof the Nile-line mares (POTN being the sire of American Pharoah) have produced a pair of stakes winners already from just 18 runners by Tapit and his sons, which is good for an “A+” TrueNicks rating. And looking further back, Tapiture himself has just seven runners from dams by Tiznow (who is Irish Pharaoh’s own broodmare sire) and two of those are black-type winners (good for an “A++” from TrueNicks). So we think those ratings bode well for this pairing, as should the fact that American Pharoah is a half-brother to a Grade 1-winning 2YO filly by Tapit.
We also like that Irish Pharaoh’s dam, J Z Now, is half to a multiple black-type earner by the AP Indy son Aptitude, another good winner ($73k earnings and 100 Equibase Speed Figure) by the AP Indy horse Master Command, and one of her half-sisters has produced a winner by the Tapit son Frosted; so the female family has worked repeatedly with Tapiture’s own sire-line.
Physically, Irish Pharaoh is a strongly-made, stout mare with plenty of leg and should be a nice like-to-like match with the slightly longer-bodied Tapiture.
All of which — we hope — should add up to a successful foal!
