(2015 dark bay/brown mare by Paynter out of For Royalty, by Not For Love)
Queen Mum was a debut winner at 2 sprinting 6 furlongs at Churchill Downs, who finished 2nd in the Rags to Riches Stakes again at Churchill on her second juvenile start, and eventually retired with $75,837 in earnings. She had been a $190,000 buy as a yearling.
Queen Mum is one of five black-type horses for her dam, the stakes-winning 2YO For Royalty, who are led by the Grade 1 winner Constellation, multiple stakes winner Truth Seeker, plus the black-type placed Upper Room and Back Flip. Constellation, Back Flip, and their half-sister Berning Question are all still in excellent production, with one more sister a broodmare in Japan.
For Royalty’s 2021 colt by Tapit was a $650,000 yearling purchase now named Edified, who broke his maiden first-time out at 2YO for trainer Steve Asmussen. Her 2022 colt by Authentic was purchased for $700,000 by the “Avengers” group and will race for trainer Bob Baffert, while she also has a ’23 colt by Not This Time and was bred to Flightline for 2024.
Queen Mum herself is the dam of:
- Spunk (2020 filly by Union Rags) – placed at 2YO during her racing career.
- Press Box (2021 colt by City of Light) – thus far unraced.
- Bossy Pants (2022 filly by Munnings).
- (2023 filly by Liam’s Map).
A big, stout, correct mare, Queen Mum was acquired by Wasabi for $14,000 at the 2024 Keeneland January Sale.
