2023 Housatonic Recommended Matings — Mia Rosa

As a daughter of the underrated, turf-centric sire Temple City, from the family of turf stakes winners Charming Kitten, Queen’splatekitten and Saranac Lake, Mia Rosa will get a shot in 2023 with the promising young NY stallion Fog of War — a G1 winner on turf at 2 by leading sire War Front.

Trained by Chad Brown, Fog of War won first time out sprinting on turf at Saratoga over a field that included the subsequent graded stakes winner Current, and then overcame greenness to run down subsequent Preakness winner War of Will in his second start in the Grade 1 Summer Stakes when stretched to a mile.  Though never able to get back to those heights during five starts at 3 and 4YO (he did finish 2nd in Belmont Park’s Manila Stakes going a mile on turf at 3, splitting eventual G1W Win Win Win and eventual G1W Casa Creed), those early accomplishments make Fog of War a fascinating stud prospect given his looks and pedigree, and he’s been popular with breeders during his first two years in NY.

By War Front, Fog of War is out of a G3-winning dam by Galileo, with his second dam being the G1 turfer Riskaverse.  Even more noteworthy is that Riskaverse is a daughter of Dynaformer, while Mia Rosa’s sire, Temple City, is a son of Dynaformer.  That means the foal from this pairing will be inbred to that noted influence for toughness and durability 3×4.  Inbreeding to Dynaformer in the 3rd and 4th generations has so far produced 23 foals of racing age, of which 14 have run, 9 have won and one is a stakes winner — so we think that bodes well for this pairing, which also rates a solid “C” on TrueNicks (a reminder that a “C” means the cross produces stakes winners at the rate you would expect for the sire and the broodmare sire overall), having produced G3 winner Royal Artillery and a couple of additional stakes winners already.  In addition, Mia Rosa’s own dam is a daughter of A.P. Indy, and War Front with A.P. Indy has been another good cross (“A+” on TrueNicks).

Physically, Mia Rosa is a big, strapping young mare, and she should add plenty of leg and scope to her foal by the more compact Fog of War — a foal which should be plenty suited to the plentiful NYRA turf tracks!
