Multiple black-type winner Bluelightspecial was a durable, consistent runner who raced 21 times from 2YO through 4YO, compiling a record of 7-2-5, for $498,535 in earnings. We acquired her on behalf of CJT Stables, LLC, at the ’24 Keeneland November Sale for $45,000 as a broodmare prospect, and she will be bred for the first time in 2025.
Bluelightspecial won her first two starts as a juvenile at 5 furlongs and 5-1/2 furlongs, and then placed in a pair of black-type events against state-bred company and hit the board in two open allowances at Churchill Downs to close her 2YO campaign. As a 3YO, she won an open, $105k allowance at Oaklawn going 1-1/16 miles, then an Indiana-bred allowance by 7 lengths at a mile. She scored her first black-type win in the Hoosier Breeders Sophomore Handicap, and added the state-bred Cardinal Handicap at the end of her sophomore season, going wire-to-wire in all four of those victories. Bluelightspecial returned at 4YO with another open allowance win at Oaklawn and then was 3rd in the open Dig a Diamond Stakes there behind graded winner Hoosier Philly. She was later 3rd in the state-bred Peony Handicap, her only try on turf, highlighting her versatility.
Bluelightspecial is a daughter of Kentucky Derby winner Super Saver, who sired Grade 1 winners Runhappy and Letruska during his time at stud at WinStar Farm. Given that he hails from the famed Numbered Account family, we expect his daughters to be excellent producers. Bluelightspecial’s female family includes her dam’s half-brother Goombada Guska, a multiple black-type winner of over $300k, plus four additional black-type placed siblings to her dam.
A tall, leggy filly with loads of scope, Bluelightspecial’s speed, durability and versatility make her an excellent broodmare prospect for a breed-to-race operation, and we are excited to see what her foals can do in the New York-bred program in the years to come!
