Described by Chad Brown as “the best-looking horse I have ever trained”, the multiple Grade 1-winning turf miler Raging Bull is horse that we have a lot of time for and have supported in each of his seasons at stud so far. Nine of his first-crop weanlings sold last fall for an average of $37,000 (not too shabby off of a $10,000 stud fee), including a pair of colts that each brought $100k, and others at $45k and $40k. Based on the looks of the colt by him that we bred in ‘23, we’re even more excited about his chances going forward, and are looking forward to sending the big, pretty, well-bred mare Mia Rosa his way in ‘24.
Raging Bull is a son of leading Irish stallion Dark Angel, renowned as a speed and precocity influence, out of a mare by the very fast American sprinter Mr. Greeley. Raging Bull had a bit more scope to him than some of the other progeny of those two, and showed his speed more as a blistering turn of foot than by rocketing from the gate. Either way, he is a beautiful specimen and was an undeniably top class turf horse.
In Mia Rosa he gets a mate who matches up very well with him physically, as both are tall, stretch, scopey horses with plenty of substance — very much a case of like-to-like. And while Mia Rosa’s closer family relatives have excelled on the bull-ring dirt track of Charles Town, she is by a noted turf stallion in Temple City and has some very good turf horses just a little further back on her page — like the full-brothers Charming Kitten, Queen’splatekitten and Portfolio Company.
So while this cross — or even a very similar version of it — hasn’t had the opportunity to be tried much, we believe that this blend of turf lines and beautiful physicals is just the thing to help Mia Rosa produce the best foal that she can!
