We’ve long been big fans of Spendthrift’s veteran value stallion Jimmy Creed, and even if he never got over the commercial hump, he’s still an eminently useful stallion that gets plenty of runners, winners, and stakes horses. He transmits precocity and versatility to his offspring, and that makes him a great choice for a young broodmare, especially one whose progeny are earmarked to be kept to race. Thus, he’ll make a perfect choice for the Godolphin-bred Modernism, who needs to switch it up for her final cover this spring.
Placed while sprinting on the all-weather as a 2YO in her only start, Modernism is a daughter of the brilliant runner Frosted, who has turned out to be a faster influence at stud — rather than the classic-type which would’ve been expected given his own profile on the race track. There are plenty of successful relatives in her female family, including dirt sprinters and two-turn turf horses, so she also brings plenty of versatility to this pairing with Jimmy Creed.
This match also allows us to highlight the short coming of nick ratings once again. TrueNicks calls this a “D”, despite the fact that Jimmy Creed with daughters of Tapit has produced five foals, four runners, all winners, including G2W King Jack, with $907,370 total earnings for those four. And looking at Jimmy Creed’s list of progeny, his G2W Private Creed is out of a daughter of Sky Mesa (like Tapit, a son of Pulpit), with additional black-type winners Strike Lightning, King of Speed, Jack Hammer, and Slider all out of A.P. Indy-line mares.
Physically, Modernism and Jimmy Creed are an excellent case of like-to-like, both being medium-sized, well-muscled individuals with excellent balance, and we’re very excited to see the foal that they produce together in 2025!
