(2019 dark bay/brown mare by Gormley out of What Am I Gonna Do, by Partner’s Hero)
We acquired One That Got Away at the end of 2023 while she was carrying her first foal, which will be a member of the first crop of True Valour. Originally sold for $33,000 as a short yearling, One That Got Away was bought for $60,000 later that fall and then returned to the ring to bring $78,000 as a 2YO in-training at Timonium. She went on to race seven times as a 3YO, breaking her maiden in a maiden special weight going 6 furlongs at Presque Isle, and also finishing 2nd in a pair of allowance races. She earned a total of $38,788.
Her appeal as a broodmare comes from the fact that she is a member of our favorite local female family, that of R. Larry Johnson’s foundation mare Ran’s Chick (the 4th dam of One That Got Away).
One That Got Away is a half-sister to the black-type winners Great Soul and Valued Notion, in addition to winner Magic Soul. Her dam also has a ’21 filly by Vino Rosso named Phone Eats First, who was a $110k yearling buy, and a ’22 colt by Holy Boss.
Her 2nd dam, the black-type placed What Do I Do, also produced multiple black-type winners Heaven Knows What (dam of ’23 black-type placed winner Whenigettoheaven) and Doing Great, plus black-type placed winner That’sthequestion and another seven winners.
What Do I Do is a half-sister to the black-type winner What It Is (dam of black-type placed And A Cherry Tree), to the black-type placed winner Not What I Do (dam of black-type winner Do What I Say and black-type placed Heros Image), to the black-type placed winner Dowhatisay, and to the winners Kelly’s Question (dam of black-type winners Harbingerofthings (in turn the dam of G2W/G1P Tell Your Daddy and ’24 G3W Dynadrive) and A Lover’s Question, plus black-type placed Day the Music Died and Mr. Magician) and Dowhatyouwanttwodo (dam of multiple black-type winner and G3-placed Partners Due).
One That Got Away’s 3rd dam is the 11-time winner Whatwouldhappenif, a daughter of the aforementioned Ran’s Chick.
One That Got Away will be bred back to Blofeld after she delivers her True Valour foal in ’24.
