A hard-knocking, versatile racemare who won five races from 5 furlongs on turf to 1-1/16 miles on dirt while running from 3YO through 7YO, Princess Phone earned a total of $148,419 during her career and picked up open company black-type when 2nd in the $150k Chicken Fried Stakes. She compiled a career record of (28) 5-6-4 after having been purchased as a yearling for $70,000, and was claimed at one point by trainer Steve Asmussen for Clark Brewster, for whom she achieved two of her victories.
Her speed and versatility are exactly what we have targeted for a client looking to breed to race in the lucrative New York state-bred program, and we are very excited to have acquired Princess Phone carrying her first foal by Eclipse Champion Jackie’s Warrior on behalf of CJT Stables, LLC, at the ’24 Keeneland November Sale for $40,000.
Sired by the Grade 1 winner, leading freshman sire of his crop, and now consistent value stallion Dialed In (whose offspring include the likes of Grade 1 winners Defunded, Super Stock and Get Her Number), Princess Phone is one of eight winners from nine foals out of her winning dam, Cantilena. Cantilena has an additional claim to fame beyond this laudable produce record in that she’s a half-sister to the Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Sprint and Met Mile victor Silver Train. Their dam, and Princess Phone’s 2nd dam, was the New York-bred black-type earner Ridden in Thestars, one of three NY-bred black-type earners out of her dam, including the 2YO black-type winner Pro Cove.
So there are plenty of hard-knocking types on this catalog page, just like Princess Phone herself, and that should complement the foal that she’s carrying by the brilliant, consistent and durable Jackie’s Warrior. This foal will be from the second crop of that son of Maclean’s Music, who was a Grade 1 winner each year from 2YO through 4YO, including the Champagne, the Hopeful, the H. Allen Jerkens, the Vanderbilt and the Churchill Downs Stakes. His first weanlings are at the sales this fall, and the first 21 of them to sell have averaged over $174k with a $190k median. This foal will be bred on one of the best crosses for Maclean’s Music, which is actually the one that produced Jackie’s Warrior himself — and this foal will have a fascinating pedigree pattern as Jackie’s Warrior is the product of a Forty Niner/AP Indy cross, while Cantilena is the product of the reverse AP Indy/Forty Niner cross.
Physically, Princess Phone is a leggy, rangy, scopey mare, which should be a nice like-to-like for the surprisingly-leggy Jackie’s Warrior, and will make her easy to mate going forward as well.
